Technical Tuesday

This little exercise is so perfect. I am preparing to paint my next painting for the "Elements" art show and it is Water. The water painting I want to paint  will have coy fish.

Today we will learn how to paint fish in a bowl.

This exercise comes from Eileen Sorg.

 

 

 

 

l. use a light, cool gray to outline the shape of the fishbowl and shade areas of the goldfish. Then add darker outlines to the bowl using a medium, warm gray. Bring in some light cerulean blue for the water.

2. add blue-gray to the bottom of the bowl and along the surface of the water.

 

 

 

3. Lighten the outlines of the fish with an eraser; then fill them in with bright yellow. Apply dark pink over the gray areas on the fish.

 

 

 

4. Create the mouths with black. Then accent the fish with red and erase any remaining pencil lines.

 

 

 

Oh, they are so cute. This was a great practice with circles and making everything look symmetric.

The days are getting longer and as they do I want to be outside more and more. That means that I have less time in the studio. I have found that if you make a committment to a regular time to do your exercises this time  while become time you look forward to and enjoy.
Today we will be drawing a parrot, by Eileen Sorg.

Apply yellow around the eyes and beak. fill in the pupils and other areas of the eyes with a dark, warm gray, leaving highlights in each eye. Apply this color over the beak, varying the pressure and leaving some areas white to suggest shape. Also stroke in the darks around the beak and within the feathers.

Fill in the irises with red-orange. Then apply bright green to most of the feathers and deepen the beak with black.

fill in the rest of the feathers with teal, overlapping the bright green in places. fill in the pupils cleaving highlights and the holes above the beak with black.

Today we will make a quick drawing of a snail. This exercise comes from Ed Tadem.

As an artist I draw everyday. My exercises are small. Just something in pencil. These quick studies are not meant to be framed but to loosen up my fingers and hand. I sometimes just start with swirls on the page, lines, criss crosses and when I'm ready I will get out a clean paper and start an exercise.

I like this exercise because circles are hard and the more you practise them the more they become balanced. Do not try for perfection with this exercise, more just let you pencil flow.

• Draw a misshapen circle for the shell; then add the neck, head, and tentacles.
• refine the basic shapes, defining the tentacles and adding the spiral pattern to the shell. Indicate a slime trail.
• continue refining shapes and begin shading, adding radial lines and spots to the shell. Build up the darks, deepening the shading and creating the ridged texture of the shell. And he's off.
• After I completed my exercise I continued by bring in some color with my color pencils.
