What painting has become the most famous portrait in the world?

What painting has become the most famous "portrait" in the world?
........Whistler's Mother.....
Even though Whistler's intentions for this painting was not to draw a portrait of his mother, the general public ignored his intentions and have instead gone beyond his study of grey and black, to claim that it was a tribute to mothers.
The original title was  simply,
"Grey and Black No. 1"
He was studying composition and color with no real regard for a portrait.
Before he was allowed to hang his painting in the Royal Academy of Art in London, England, Whistler was asked to change the title to Portrait of the Artist's Mother.
